Christmas moneysaving tips

Christmas can be an especially expensive time of year, so it's wise to gain some cost-cutting habits. Remember, never buy Christmas on credit: this will only lead to more debt problems. Below are some tips to make your Christmas worry-free:

Gifts

  • Make a budget and stick to it. Change your present-buying philosophy: don't ask yourself, "Where can I buy this cheapest?" Instead think, "What can I buy that's within my budget?"
  • Save up for Christmas: taking your own sandwiches to work could save you over £50 a month, which you can put towards your Christmas spends.
  • Use price comparison sites when shopping online: 123pricecheck.com is easy to use and covers books, music, games and DVDs.
  • Get cashback on online purchases from a site such as Quidco: many sites offer around 5-10% cashback on online purchases.
  • Great gifts are thoughtful gifts, not expensive gifts. Make presents and decorations wherever possible: the Internet has many websites devoted to Christmas crafts. From handmade chocolates, to gingerbread tree decorations. Sites such as allfreecrafts.com provide excellent crafty inspiration.
  • Create coupons on your computer and give IOUs for babysitting or massages. Some sites even have ready-made coupons.
  • Magazine subscriptions make excellent gifts, and there are many websites offering discounts on these, such as iSubscribe. You could also use Tesco Deals vouchers.
  • Consider shopping in designer outlets and discount stores: in addition to clothing, TK Maxx often has an excellent selection of designer furnishings and giftware.

Food

  • Take advantage of special offers in supermarkets: start planning early, and buy food items when they are on offer, rather than at the last minute.
  • Use a grocery shopping comparison site to get the best deal on your Christmas food shop: mysupermarket.com
  • Don't exchange Tesco Clubcard vouchers for grocery purchases; instead, swap them for activity days and family trips with Tesco Deals.

Christmas Day

  • Forage for decorations: don't buy expensive items from florists, instead create decorations from holly, ivy and rosehips that you've collected from your local woodlands. Use silver spray-paint to turn dried seed-heads from garden plants (such as Alliums, teasel, sea holly, grasses, etc) into attractive tree ornaments. You could also make a wreath for your front door.
  • Don't pay over the odds for a letter from Santa: Royal Mail promises a reply to each letter sent with a stamp to: Santa, Santa's Grotto, Reindeerland, SAN TA1. Letters should be sent before 12th December, but preferably earlier.
  • Call relatives at off-peak times when calls are free, or better still, use Skype.
  • Don't pay for a Christmas television guide: use an online version, such as tvguide.co.uk
