Debt Consolidation: The Consolation of Consolidating
Debt consolidation is often seen as a consolation – for some, it can be. By reducing your monthly outgoings and consolidating all your loans, credit card debts, and store card debts using a lower interest loan, you could regain control of your expenditure. The only way of tackling debt is to face up to it. But it needn't be hard work. By contacting specialist debt advisors, they can guide you through the debt consolidation packages available - finding the right solution for you.
Debt consolidation for peace of mind
A debt consolidation loan can give you peace of mind – it will stop creditors sending threatening or demanding letters – leaving you with just one affordable monthly repayment. But a debt consolidation loan alone isn't all you need if you want a healthy financial future. Once you have your debt consolidation loan in place you should consider a debt management plan.
Prioritise and cut down
One of the first things you need to do to manage your money effectively is prioritise your debts – with a debt consolidation loan this is done for you. If you have taken out a consolidation loan, you should then take a look at where the rest of your budget is going. Look at your utility bills, insurance payments and other necessities and shop around for cheaper offers. Every little counts. In many cases, people are paying for the same insurance twice – check the small print - many bank accounts now offer free travel insurance or breakdown cover, for instance.
Budget
Once you've checked you're paying the most competitive prices for household services and utilities, you need to draw up a budget. There are online budget calculators you can use, or simply sit down with a pen and paper. List your income on one side and your outgoings on the other – use a recent bank statement as a guide.
Cut down
It sounds obvious, but it's harder to do in practice. Sitting down with your bank statements will give you an idea on what you're spending needlessly on – clothes, beer or wine, magazine subscriptions, expensive gym membership, costly supermarket shops…there's a lot to be said for living within your means if you want to climb out of debt. If you don't need it, you can live without it. And if you do need it, you can probably find it cheaper if you shop around.
Sell, sell, sell
Another thing you can do is put unwanted gifts or items you don't need that could be of value on eBay. Even what you might think of as junk could raise a few quid at a garage sale. And consider the option of renting out your garage or driving space, or taking on lodgers. Keep your eyes peeled for ways to bump your income.
A debt consolidation loan is one of the most common ways of dealing with overwhelming debts. If you want to find out more, contact Kensington Financial Management Consultants.
